Knowing which words to use at a given time is a prerequisite to translating.
As a native speaker of English, I know which words to use to make your original text have the same effect on people in the English speaking world as it has on people in your native language, be that German or Welsh. In having your "words" translated by a competent native speaker, you are not only doing as Pindar said, and having your text live longer than your deeds, you are also reaching out to audiences in a foreign country or countries.
